Today, while at my parents’ house, I was helping my dad get his desktop up and running again. He had a version of Windows XP 64 bit that would shutdown after an hour, since it was just a trial, and he wanted to put his old copy of regular XP back on it. We go ahead and back up all important data, pop in the XP CD, and reboot the machine.
I now wait until I get the “Press any key to boot from CD” message and press a key.
Nothing.
Reboot, try again.
Nothing.
OK. Try plugging the USB keyboard into a different port.
Nothing.
This goes on for a good 10 minutes, and I can’t figure out why the hell his damn keyboard won’t work during boot. I figure I’ll step away to think about it.
20 minutes later I remember to check the BIOS to see if USB keyboard support is enabled.
It wasn’t.
It’s sad that I didn’t remember this sooner, as I used to work as a PC tech. It’s also awesome that I forgot this, because it means I’ve come so far as to start forgetting what fixing computers is like.
It‘s quite in here! Why not leave a response?
